PC055 - Breaking the Cycle of Violence with Plymouth Co. District Attorney Tim Cruz

Since 2001, Tim Cruz has served as Plymouth County District Attorney, working to protect and promote the public safety of nearly 500,000 Plymouth County residents. His primary role is to enforce the law by investigating and prosecuting criminal cases while working in conjunction with local police departments and the Massachusetts State Police. Throughout his tenure as DA, Tim has strived to remove guns, drugs, and violent offenders off the streets of Plymouth County while partnering with agencies and initiating programs that address the social, economic, and health challenges within its communities. Tim is responsible for developing and implementing multiple ground-breaking programs, including the county’s Drug Abuse Task Force, the Plymouth County Outreach program, the Safe Streets Task Force, and the Human Trafficking Task Force.

Tim joins me today to discuss the impact that District Attorneys can have on the communities they serve. We discuss why he’s passionate about helping his community break the cycle of violence and why he believes training first responders and school professionals on ways to identify and deal with children that have witnessed violence is the first step to breaking the cycle. We explain the Handle with Care program currently in place in Plymouth County and how it helps aid children after witnessing a violent crime. We discuss Tim’s approach on the war on drugs and the programs he has in place to help the children that are caught in the middle. We also discuss why Tim believes political beliefs should remain separete from the role of the DA and why DA’s should focus more on serving and making a positive impact on their communities.

“If you can get in front of all these things and juggle all these balls, and most importantly, get other groups to work with you – you can make a difference.” - Tim Cruz
